About the Library

Mission

The mission of the Ellsworth Public Library is to provide a safe, welcoming environment with a variety of resources and programming to educate and inform visitors. We will support the free access to information and ideas and serve the public through a variety of enriching programs that expand their understanding of the world.

Vision

The Ellsworth Public Library envisions itself to be a resource for the region providing open access to information, resources, and programming to serve diverse needs. We believe in promoting the love of reading and the power of literacy and knowledge. We will be a place where ideas flourish, lives are enriched, and a sense of community is created.

History

The Ellsworth Public Library formed in 1924 when a book collection was established in the Dr. Deo C. Munger home. Soon after, it was transferred to the Opera Hall, sharing the same room as the bowling alley. In March of 1925, the library moved to the Combacker building, and in 1932, the library moved again to the basement of the community hall. In 1975, the library moved once more into the upper space of the community hall which was the former theater. A renovation was completed in 1995 to accommodate the need for more space. On January 23, 2023, the library held a grand opening at its current location at 388 W. Main St., a renovated bank building.

Parking

Free parking is available in the library parking lot at the back of the building. You may also park on Main Street in front of the library.

Handicap Accessibility

The Ellsworth Library is handicap accessible at the north side of the building. You will also find accessible parking there.
